To free up storage on iPhone, open Settings > General > iPhone Storage, see which items take the most space, and start with the biggest. The usual wins are turning on Optimize Storage for iCloud Photos, emptying the Recently Deleted album, clearing large message attachments and offloading apps you rarely open. Most of these free space without deleting a single photo you want to keep.

This guide goes through each step in the order that tends to give the most space back first. Every iOS detail comes from an Apple Support page, which is linked next to the step.

1. See what is using the space

Apple’s guide to managing storage on iPhone says to go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage, where the available storage is shown at the top of the screen. Apple’s storage article adds that the list below shows your apps with their storage usage, and tapping an app’s name shows more detail.

Look at the top three or four entries before you delete anything. Photos, Messages and a handful of large apps account for most of the space on most phones, and that tells you which of the steps below is worth your time.

2. Check the recommendations

On the same screen, Apple says to tap Show All to see the recommendations for your device. To turn one on, tap Enable. To review what you could delete, tap the recommendation itself. What shows up depends on your device and what is on it, so some phones will see more suggestions than others.

3. Offload apps instead of deleting them

Offloading removes the app and keeps what it created. On the app’s page in iPhone Storage, Apple’s description of the option is that it “frees up storage used by the app, but keeps its documents and data.” Deleting the app removes the app and its related data.

For a large app you use once in a while, offloading is the safer choice, since your data is still there when you reinstall it.

You can also let iPhone do this on its own. Apple’s storage guide says that when storage is low, iPhone can automatically remove unused apps while keeping your data, and the icon stays on your Home Screen with a cloud symbol you tap to reinstall. To turn it on, go to Settings > Apps > App Store and turn on Offload Unused Apps.

4. Turn on Optimize Storage for photos

Photos and videos are the biggest category for many people. If you use iCloud Photos, you can keep full-resolution originals in iCloud and smaller versions on the phone. Apple explains that with Optimize Storage, your device keeps space-saving versions of your photos and videos while iCloud Photos stores the full-resolution originals. The originals download when you need them.

To turn it on, Apple gives these steps for iPhone:

  1. Open Settings and tap your name, then tap iCloud.
  2. Under Saved to iCloud, tap Photos.
  3. Tap iPhone Storage, then choose Optimize Storage.

Apple notes that in iOS 26 or earlier you choose Optimize Storage directly, without the extra iPhone Storage step.

There is a trade-off. The originals live in iCloud, so a photo you open that is no longer stored in full on the phone has to download first, over Wi-Fi or cellular.

5. Empty Recently Deleted

Deleting a photo does not give the space back right away. Apple says deleted photos and videos are kept in the Recently Deleted collection for 30 days before being permanently removed from your iPhone, iCloud and other devices on your Apple Account.

If you want the space now, you can remove them yourself:

  1. Open Photos and tap Collections.
  2. Tap Recently Deleted under Utilities, then tap View Album and unlock with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode.
  3. Tap Select, choose the items, then tap the more button and tap Delete.

This cannot be undone once you confirm. If you are not sure that something in there should go, read how to recover deleted photos on iPhone first. One more thing from the same Apple page. With iCloud Photos on, deleting a photo on one device deletes it on every device that uses iCloud Photos.

6. Clear message attachments

Photos, videos and files sent in Messages can add up. Apple’s Messages guide covers deleting individual attachments or whole conversations, and the storage list in step 1 shows how much space Messages takes.

Two details from Apple worth knowing:

  • Deleted messages and attachments stay in a Recently Deleted folder in Messages for 30 days. You can remove them before that by opening Messages, tapping the button at the top of the conversation list, tapping Recently Deleted, selecting the conversations and tapping Delete. Apple says this can’t be undone.
  • To clear old messages automatically, go to Settings > Apps > Messages, scroll down and tap Keep Messages below Message History. You can choose 30 days, a year or forever. Apple warns that if you pick anything other than Forever, your conversations, including all attachments, are removed after that period.

If you use Messages in iCloud, deleting a message or conversation on your iPhone deletes it from all your devices where Messages in iCloud is turned on. Think about that before you shorten the period.

7. Hidden photos still take up space

Hiding a photo is a privacy feature and does not remove anything. Apple’s Photos guide says hidden photos are moved to the Hidden collection, and that is all it does. Nothing is deleted, so a library full of hidden photos frees no space until you delete, move or optimize them. If you are working out how to hide photos on iPhone, it helps to know that hiding and clearing space are two separate jobs.

8. Moving private photos into a vault app

If you keep sensitive photos in a vault app, remember that a vault app stores its own copies of what you import. Importing does not move the originals out of your Photos library for you. To get the space back, delete the originals from Photos after you have checked that they opened correctly in the vault, then delete them again from Recently Deleted, since the deleted copies sit there for 30 days.

Do those in that order. Do not delete the originals before you are sure the import worked.

Where Forevault fits

Forevault is our vault app for iPhone. Files are encrypted on the device with AES-256-GCM. You can open it with a pattern on a 5×5 grid, a passcode or a password, and Face ID is optional. Separate vaults can use separate patterns, and the lock screen doesn’t list them. It has a 12-word recovery phrase, an encrypted backup to your own iCloud with “Test a restore”, and export to Photos or Files is always free. There is no account and nothing is collected. The free tier covers 100 photos, 10 videos and 3 vaults.

It protects against someone holding your phone, not forensic analysis. Download Forevault on the App Store.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my iPhone storage full after I deleted photos?

Deleted photos stay in the Recently Deleted collection for 30 days, according to Apple. Open Photos > Collections > Recently Deleted, select the items and delete them to free the space now.

How do I free up space on iPhone without deleting photos?

Turn on Optimize Storage for iCloud Photos so the phone keeps smaller versions while the originals stay in iCloud. Offload large apps you rarely use, and clear large message attachments. None of these remove photos from your library.

Does offloading an app delete my data?

No. Apple says offloading frees the storage used by the app but keeps its documents and data. Deleting the app removes the app and its related data.

Do hidden photos take up storage?

Hiding only moves a photo to the Hidden collection, according to Apple. It does not delete it, so it frees no space. To get the space back, delete the photo or move it out of your library.

Where do I check what is using my iPhone storage?

Go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage. The available storage is shown at the top, and the list below shows apps and their usage.

Is it safe to turn on Optimize Storage?

It keeps originals in iCloud, so opening a photo that is stored in a smaller version on the phone means downloading the original first. If you delete a photo with iCloud Photos on, it is deleted on all your devices.
